Breeding the best little dogs in the world!

Training Your Dog

Having a well trained and obedient dog is so important, especially since dogs are welcome in public more than ever these days. Setting boundaries early, and establishing that you are the boss is crucial in a well-balanced dog. Aggression should NEVER be tolerated or ignored. So many people think that it's cute when little dogs have attitude, but it's total disrespect! It's caused either from anxiety, improper socialization and lack of or no training.

Some great training classes that are available are:

  • Puppy Kindergarten/Puppy Socialization
  • Beginning Obedience
  • Advanced Obedience
  • Beginning Agility
  • Advanced Agility
  • Fly Ball
  • Confirmation(show classes)
  • French Ring(sometimes small dogs do well in that)
  • Canine Good Citizen Classes

There are many things that you can do early on to establish that you are the boss. Some examples are:

Hand feed your puppy for at least the first 2 weeks of ownership.

This way the puppy sees that you are the provider. The food should be taken gently, if they are too rough or a tooth makes contact with your hand, they do not get the food. Licking at your hand is ok, and waiting politely in a sit or a down is even better and they should get the food.

Reguraly handle their feet, ears, and mouth.

By doing this, they will be more accepting of nailtrims, ear cleans and oral exams/dental care. The more home-care that you can handle on your own , the less in will cost you at the Vet. You should be able to do anything to your dog, and handle them anywhere without them becoming aggressive or nippy.

Don't allow them to bark/growl at other animals.

Having an animal friendly dog is SO important. If for some reason your dog escapes, has to be boarded, or has to be placed in another home, you want them to be well socialized. It's healthier for them, and less stressful on you.

Never allow your dog to walk in front of you on a leash.

By pulling the leash, and walking in front of you the dog is in control of you. They should walk beside you, or behind you only. They should not be allowed to pee/poo unless you stop and allow them to. Also, they shouldn't be allowed to smell objects unless you allow them to.
