Breeding the best little dogs in the world!

The Conflict We Face....

There are many Boston Terrier breeders out there that frown upon the breeding of any "off-colored" dogs. They say that the brown and whites/red and whites are mutants, and in no way resemble the breed standard. If they accidentally occur in a strict black and white breeders litter, it is something to be ashamed of. The off-colored Boston is spayed or neutered ASAP or euthanized. These same breeders say that the colored Boston Terriers will never be approved officially by the AKC, and that anyone who breeds or supports them is a backyard breeder.

That is too bad, I hate to see such closed minded people. How can you be so in love with the breed, yet hate certain ones due to color? I LOVE the "off-colored" Bostons best, but I also love and respect the black and whites.  Some people are just so scared of change. I think, as does a growing number of people, that the chocolates/reds are beautiful creatures. They are not any different than the breed standard in any way but color. They have the same loving, outgoing personalities, and fearless attitudes. They have the same markings and size ranges. It's wonderful to have choices when it comes to a breed. I love the labrador retrievers line for that reason, yellows, blacks, or chocolates are all accepted by AKC.

As far as being called "backyard breeders", that truly offends me. I do more health screening on my dogs than just about any Boston Breeder who is breeding for the "standard". I CERF certify all my dog's vision, BAER certify their hearing, OFA certify that they don't have hip dysplasia or luxating patellas. All my pets are examined several times a year by a Vetrinarian, and all our dogs get annual blood work and fecal exams to ensure they are 100% healthy. They are kept current on all vaccines, flea control and heartworm prevention. I have papers on all my dogs, and do not line breed(inbreed)or do "blind" breeding(not checking pedigrees prior to mating dogs). I don't breed any of my bitches until they have had at least 2 heats, and they have passed all of their health screens. My dogs are well socialized with dogs and people, and are not made to live their lives in  cages or dog runs. They are my pets, as well as my breeding dogs.

Many anti-colored Boston people claim that red/brown Bostons are sold at too high a price. That we are ripping people off. Again, it's too bad certain people can't see the value in these dogs. Considering all the precautions we take with our dogs, and all the health testing that we provide the price is nothing but fair. Yorkshire terriers, French Bulldogs, English bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniles, American Pitbull terriers etc, easily go for $2,000-$4,000 dollars with limited health tests, or non at all.

In conclusion, some folks just need to realize that change can be a very good thing and not be be so put out by it. We are not breeding mutants, or unhealthy dogs. We won't be frightened off by the uptight Boston Terrier community who is trying so hard to prevent this unique line of Boston Terriers from being officially recognized.

ALL COLOR BOSTON TERRIER CLUB

There are many people out there that are in support of colored Boston Terriers, and now we have formed a group. We need all the help we can get, it's a true shame that AKC hasn't yet accepted the red Bostons fully. The leaders of this club are hard at work contacting AKC and are trying to get them to change their standards. In the meantime, we must stick together.
